Gosh it feels good to say that!

I’ve decided that this blog is not the place for political arguments.  However, I just want to quickly mention one thing that I hope Obama will accomplish in the next four or eight years.  It doesn’t have to do with domestic or foreign policy, but with the hearts and minds of Christians in the USA.

I hope that by watching Obama as president, many conservative Christians will come to the conclusion that he is not an enemy, but a reasonable and well-meaning leader with genuine Christian faith who happens to be a liberal.  I hope that Christians in the USA will realise that those things are not contradictory.

I hope that those same Christians will decide that the differences which define the left/right political spectrum are utterly shallow compared to the affinity between liberals and conservatives (and everyone in-between) who care about working for the common good and are committed to honesty, integrity and compassion.

If Obama betrays our trust by compromising those moral values, then please feel free to demonise him.  But if he doesn’t — if his record in the next four years is a record of service to the common good — then I hope it will be the impetus needed for conservative Christians to begin re-examining their values and priorities, and what they look for when supporting (or denouncing) future politicians.
